Grants awarded in four research areas
Meet the recipients of the 2023 LCRF Leading Edge Grant in Lung Cancer, LCRF Research Grant on Early Detection and Pre-Neoplasia in Lung Cancer, LCRF Research Grants on Understanding Resistance in Lung Cancer, and LCRF Minority Career Development Award (CDA) for Lung Cancer.

IASLC and LCRF partner to fund $2.5M, 4-year team science award
IASLC and LCRF have created a new Team Science award to focus on furthering the development of novel therapies, including immunotherapeutic approaches, for patients with oncogene-driven lung cancers. "Partnering with IASLC on funding research that will bring us closer to a cure is not only exciting, it is the right thing to do," said Dr. Antoinette Wozniak, LCRF Chief Scientific Officer. "We firmly believe that it is in working together funders as well as researchers that solutions will be discovered and survivorship will increase.”

RFPs open for 2024 research awards
LCRF is accepting submissions for four core funding mechanisms aimed at finding solutions to the most pressing issues in lung cancer. “Each year, LCRF funds innovative new ideas to understand treatment resistance, tackle disparities, increase the diversity of the lung cancer research workforce and support science that seeks solutions to lung cancer’s many complexities, said Katerina Politi, PhD, chair, LCRF Scientific Advisory Board. "The board looks forward to reviewing the many novel applications we will receive through the process."

New option for treating ROS-1+ NSCLC
Patients with ROS-1 positive lung cancer have a new, effective treatment option. In November, the FDA approved reprotrectinib (Augtyro™) for treatment of advanced ROS-1 fusion NSCLC. Memorial Sloan Kettering's Alexander Drilon, MD, a former LCRF grantee, was first author of the TRIDENT-1 trial which led to the development.

Jill Morningstar, Tejal Patel join board
LCRF is pleased to welcome Jill Morningstar and Tejal Patel to its Board of Directors. Ms. Morningstar (left) recently spearheaded a fundraising campaign honoring her husband, Al Fitzpayne. Her efforts resulted in the support of five LCRF grantees. Ms. Patel, a health care executive, was diagnosed with lung cancer a year ago while completing her master's degree studies. She formed a team, Breathe Easy Fight Hard, for the 2023 Free to Breathe Chicago Walk and raised over $46K for research.

LCRF has published an all-new update of its booklet Immunotherapy for the Treatment of Lung Cancer. It joins our flagship booklet, Living with Lung Cancer, which was fully updated in 2023. These free resources, along with an array of other materials for patients and caregivers, are available for order or download at LCRF.org/resources.
