Are you a dreamer? Can you imagine?
A few years ago as I passed the finish line of the NYC Marathon in support of our Children’s Hospital in the Bronx realizing that I have lost two beloved toenails and just experienced what no one ever should- a bleeding nipple, I felt that my short and somewhat low-key career in long distance running was over….up until a few weeks ago when suddenly a plea appeared in my mailbox from an organization very close to my heart- the Lung Cancer Research Foundation to support them as a charity runner for this year’s NYC marathon just about 4 months from now. Organizations such as LCRF are key to be able to fund our young and bright scientists to obtain necessary funding to be able to stay in our field!
How could I possibly say no then to such a special request after witnessing in my work over the last 20 years all the great advances we have made in the treatment of lung cancer thanks to the support of great organizations such as LCRF? So I have tied my shoelaces again and am ready to sacrifice any of my remaining 8 toenails as long as I can get your support! Any donation I get, your name will be printed on my T-shirt on marathon day- pics coming!
If you are a prospective individual donor, you might be embarrassed to ask- how much should I donate? A good entry level donation might be $10- equaling the number of kilograms I at minimum need to lose – the exchange ratio is 2.2 in case you want to pay in lbs… However, you might say to yourself- well, this guy is 50+ for God's sake..
If you are a prospective industry sponsor, I realize I might have a hard time to woo you for several reasons- but let me try:
1. Your corporation will want to sponsor a celebrity, like George Clooney, Brad Pitt or if those are no longer available, at least Steve Martin. But do you have enough funds to pull that off? No- but can you afford to sponsor Dr. Steve Martin here? You certainly can and no one in the crowd will ever notice the difference!
2. Your boss might also want to have a star athlete- like Shalane Flanagan or Meb Keflezighi. But think about this – those gazelles would shortchange you by carrying your logo for a mere 2 hours or so- I guarantee at least twice the exposure and likely more!
3. I am not greedy- all I ask for is the price of just a single cycle of your top-selling drug. And to get the competitive juices up- I will print and carry the name of my highest paying sponsor on my sunshield and get in full compliance with the Sunshine act!
Still I recognize how many others might be in the running for the limited dollars out there – in fact, who does not run for or from something in today’s hectic world? So, in order to be able to show my full commitment, I decided to go the extra mile and created the below campaign video- music by John Lennon, lyrics/vocals/Hungarian accent/shoe modeling and video editing by myself. The video contains educational material and a few bold and forward-looking statements. If you complete watching it, you will qualify for 4-minutes of CME credits- code is 262GOBLAZE.
Please enjoy and if you agree with the message, like/tweet/share and donate if you can for this terrific cause. Let’s imagine together- a world without lung cancer! Only with your support can we achieve that!
