Help me in supporting research!
Did you know??
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide.
It is estimated that 228,000 people will receive a diagnosis of lung cancer and 143,000 lives will be lost this year.
1/15 men and 1/17 women will develop lung cancer in their lifetime. A majority being those who have already quit smoking, but also those exposed to second hand smoke, asbestos, radiation, pollution, and diesel exhaust.
Five year survival rates are currently only 19% (compared to 98 or 90% for Prostate and Breast cancer, respectively). Although this is low, it has increased recently with the help of research creating new treatment options.
I last participated in a Free to Breathe event in Lake George, NY (home for me) along side my mother who has lost both of her sisters to lung cancer. Lung cancer has had a large and difficult impact on us all after quickly taking these two very strong women who were mothers, sisters, wives, and aunts. This is a story a large number of participants at this event will share. I would love to be home at the October event alongside my mother but I was happy to see an event pop up here at my new home in Athens, GA. No matter the location, I want to continue to participate and raise money for lung cancer research so the trend of improving five year survival rates can continue.
I will be participating in the Lung Cancer Research Foundation's 2019 Athens Free to Breathe Run/Walk and the funds I raise will be used directly toward research and education to help improve outcomes for those affected by lung cancer. Your donation, no matter the amount, will help make a big difference in the lives of many.
I cannot change the button that says "Donate to Jessica" dispayed on desktops ("Donate Now" on mobile sites) but know that your donation is in no way directed at or for me. Your donation will directly fund the Lung Cancer Research Foundation's lifesaving lung cancer research and education programs under my runners account. The Lung Cancer Research Foundation's focus is on making surviving lung cancer the expectation, not the exception.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to find me and ask! Thank you in advance for your support and generosity. Together, we have the ability to make a difference for each and every person whose life has been touched by lung cancer.
P.S. If you are interested in joining me on event day, know that it's easy to sign up and there are walking and running categories available! They are also looking for volunteers to help set up and break down if you are unable to participate in the run/walk and still want to find ways to help!
