2019 Chicago Lung Run

#WeFight

On her birthday in 2017, my mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Lung Cancer ... on her 63rd birthday.  In speaking with the Oncology Team with Franscian St. James - Olympia Fields, our Oncologist Dr. Masood Ghouse, we were advised that my mother had 12-14 months "to breathe".  From that moment, with resilience and tenancity, my mother fought!  Christmas of 2017 was especially difficult, as the cancer had spread to her brain.  As her primary caregiver, I told my mother that I would be there to fight alongside her because we were in this together!  As her 64th birthday approached, she wanted a BIG party!  She wanted all family members and loved ones present, and she ensured that she took an individual photo with each and every person (which I learned later was her final goodbye memory to each of them).  Her goal was to make it to see another year .... to fight to live and breathe into another year.  With the surge of energy, she made it - ringing in her 64th year surrounded by family and friends ........ She died 10 days later; wrapped in my arms, in the comfort of her own bed at home.

As I entered my 40th birthday this year, one of my goals in honoring my mother was a 5K Run/Walk to raise funds and awareness to lung cancer.  I am asking each of you to help support me in honoring the woman who showed me the meaning of a true figther's spirit, humility, dedication, and love.

I will be participating in the Lung Cancer Research Foundation's 2019 Chicago Lung Run; raising funds to improve outcomes for those affected by lung cancer.  Your donation helps fund lifesaving lung cancer research and education programs focused on making surviving lung cancer the expectation, not the exception. You have the power to give families hope when a loved one is facing a lung cancer diagnosis and helping to honor the legacy and love of my mother, Pamela Perkins. On her birthday in 2017, my mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Lung Cancer ... on her 63rd birthday.
